My Approach In Working With You.

What motivates you to examine your life? Over the past thirty years, I developed Vitalogy by working with hundreds of clients. It has been an honor to listen to their stories. Their intimate sharing, through their own words and as manifested in their bodies, became essential for interpreting my own journey. Along the way, I gained perspective on our collective story as well. I became a massage therapist and created Bio-Somatic Therapy to facilitate that.
We each determine what progress represents to us. Progress that can be measured. And managed. An excellent starting point: knowing the impact of our life experience; what our human needs are; having willingness to take ownership for all of this. This forges great understanding of our own behavior and the behavior of those closest to us. With enough practice, or “time-on-task” as I like to say, we appreciate ourselves and others more fully. This inspired me to create the VitalMind Course and become a life coach.
Our mind’s connection  to our body echoes another critically important and intimate relationship. Fortunately, our body already knows what it loves and needs. By helping it manage the impact of technology, we have potential for sustaining our physical prime of life longer. For these reasons I created the VitalBody Course and became a personal trainer.

Will Nelson advocates for people dedicated to extending the physical & mental prime of their lives. For 30 years, he has contributed to the health & wellness industry and continues to innovate with thought leadership today.
As a young adult, he studied the human potential and took internships with doctors and health care providers. He supplemented his hands-on and clinical education by becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist, a Certified Exercise Physiologist, and earning a BA in Psychology. He has extensive training in Non-Violent Communication (NVC), permanently sustainable agriculture (Permaculture), and the creative process.

My Approach To Personal Training

Understanding movement makes for proper movement. Without that, you can’t exercise safely, effectively, and most importantly, sustainably. We learn the alphabet, the building blocks of words, so we can read and write. The elements of movement form the building blocks of exercise… and all other physical activity.

Developing “movement literacy” involves axiomatic truths with universal applications. Those represent the foundation of my personal training program. Additional principles relate to your age, body type, personality, and aspirations for your body; fitness and otherwise.

Next is developing a relationship, a bonding with your body. As a friend. Not an adversary. This involves listening to your body to work in harmony with it. How would you care for your car if you only got one your whole life? Well, you only have one body and its requirements change from day-to-day. 

I teach a basic movement menu, then add complexity depending on your interest and effort levels.  Now you’re exercising from a position of knowledge and confidence. This applies throughout your life, for the rest of your life. If you move like no one else now you can move like no one else when you’re older.

My Approach to Massage Therapy

I’m good with my hands and clear in my intention. Your body possesses a built-in instinct to stretch, stay loose, and self-adjust. This reflects a vibrant expression of your physical identity. My job is to help you access that.

Bio-Somatic Therapy simultaneously lengthens out your body while activating greater movement. This restores flexibility and range of motion. Literally hundreds of various movements are employed in each session. I start by slowly moving your body in relation to mid-line, an imaginary line dividing you into front/back and left/right. All movement starts at mid-line. Expanding movement away from mid-line loosens up your body. That’s how you get comfortable. With less stiffness and restriction more physical ease and energetic flow emerges.

Clients dress in loose fitting clothing, keeping their body covered while allowing freedom of movement. Your body will be lifted, lowered, shaken lightly, and gently stretched out, without excessive force or sudden, high-impact movements. Your body literally realigns itself to better accommodate the increased variety of movement.

At times, your body is held in specific positions or “poses,” exposing points of muscle tension which limit range of motion in some capacity. Your body relaxes, lets down, releases tension, and lengthens back out. A greater variety of movement becomes possible again. A measure of mental clarity emerges from physically releasing stress.

Other than eyes to view a computer screen or TV, a hand to manipulate a mouse, and thumbs for text messaging, life today doesn’t much need our bodies.

The Emerging Science Linking Movement & Behavior.

Your body communicates both your general disposition and how you have stored past traumas and experiences. These are reflected through style of movement, pain levels, and physical tendencies in response to heightened states of stress.

Your body reacts to the dictates of your mind. Fear constricts. Hate tightens. Shock freezes. The body’s reaction to stimuli represents a natural occurrence. Not letting them go, physically or mentally, leaves them lodged in your body, sometimes for years. This illustrates how you literally and physically carry your past around with you.

The Mind Dialogues with Language, the Body with Movement.

The body’s intelligence goes beyond equating fatigue with “doing too much.” When your body tightens, you are holding something or reacting to something externally. When someone exclaims, “It doesn’t feel right in my gut,” they are referring to a bodily reaction they felt. The body serves as the site where transformation manifests in physical reality.

Traumas impacting long-term behavior result from “unprocessed memory” – memory you appear stuck on or stuck with – as opposed to the memory of events that pass on by. If you live in reaction to the trauma, the trauma becomes “hard-wired.” The unprocessed memory becomes part of your body and part of you.

Once you “embody” enough stress/trauma, you begin manifesting pain. Sometimes pain acts as a catalyst for you to confront specific issues.  Sickness also acts to improve “physical morality,” i.e., taking better care of your body and working within its limitations.

While moving your body in various directions, at certain moments I will feel a “glitch.” Here, your body redirects the movement, taking back conscious control. You and your body stop being the observer of the movement. Avoidance of an exact position of your body has been uncovered, because there exists discomfort or pain. This often reflects your body’s positioning at the time of a mental trauma or physical injury. You “embody” mental traumas just as you can physical injury.
